Mike Milgram has developed an interesting new ceramic technique that he calls shatterfrags.

"This collection extends my exploration of shapes and geometry into another medium. ShatterFrags™ are fragments of glazed pottery. Drop a thin slab of dried clay onto a firm surface. It will shatter into pieces, some of which have interesting shapes. Each selected piece is further fashioned with file and sandpaper to develop its pleasant profile, and a small hole is (very carefully!) drilled, positioned so that the "frag" will eventually hang in a pleasing orientation. Surviving frags are bisqued, glazed on both sides and fired (sometimes twice). After stringing, the process is complete."
