Don McQuade - Photographer

Photography has been a hobby of Don’s since he was a teenager. During his retirement years it has expanded to fill his time.

The photographs for which he is best known are his high contrast black and white images. This technique involves a two step copying of his original black and white negatives using a high contrast film such as Kodalith. The resulting Kodalith negatives have such high contrast that no mid tones or gray tones remain, the image on the negative being either clear or black. When Don produces prints from these negatives the prints can have no mid tones but an image that is strictly black and white. The general appearance of the prints depends somewhat on the subject matter. Some images resemble pen and ink. Some images or parts of images resemble aquatints or mezzotints as found in etchings. Some people try to explain the appearance by suggesting reticulation or printing through screens such as a mezzotint screen. Some suggest serigraphs. Since a close examination does show dots some suggest pointalism by an infinitely patient artist.

Don has exhibited in the major art and craft shows in Ontario including the Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival, Ottawa Christmas Craft Sale and the One of a Kind Craft Sale in Toronto for a number of years. His work is now available through the Valley Artisans Co-op in Deep River.
