With his software career ramping down, Joe has returned to his woodworking shop. Starting with making furniture for his own use in University, Joe has continued his life-long fascination with wood, creative design, and fine craftsmanship. For 5 years he apprenticed with his father, an award-winning Luthier. Joe made his first 5 violins under his father’s guidance. Since then he has made a further 3, and has started his #9. His most recent professional contract financed the purchase of additional machinery, which facilitated Joe’s return to furniture making.

Native hardwoods are Joe’s preferred materials. Maple and Walnut form the core of his furniture designs. Taking advantage of technical limitations imposed by machine tools, the furniture features custom-design joinery and extremely accurate tolerances. All his furniture includes unexpected features, such as hidden storage compartments or visual puns.

The need for an unusual birthday present inspired Joe to create mazes and puzzle boxes. The machine tools allow creation of mazes which would be impossible to make using only hand tools. Once the noisy machining is done, high-quality hand tools are used to achieve works of art that also have a functional purpose.

The basic intent of all Joe’s work is to create items of lasting value. The products of his years in software and management are ephemeral, the products of his woodworking shop are meant to provide generations of pleasure.

Joe joined the Valley Artisans' Coop in 2019.
